20 Things I Learned in One Year

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of the first COVID-19 case in Idaho. I know that I am not alone when I say that I had no idea what was in store for us a year ago. I was one of the people who thought things would be back to “normal” within a month or two…not because I didn’t think the pandemic was real or because I thought there was a reason to downplay the impact of the virus, but because I simply didn’t know what I didn’t know.

Speaking of not knowing what I didn’t know, here are 20 things I’ve learned over the last year…in no particular order:
  1. Grocery pick-up and delivery are the best things on earth!
  2. Staying home is so much better than I ever gave it credit for. But I miss traveling. A. LOT.
  3. Zoom is the greatest. And after months and months of Zoom calls, it is also the worst. The phrase of the year: “You’re on mute."
  4. I have a habit of licking my fingers to open plastic bags in the produce department.
  5. Dogs make fantastic coworkers, but they do not like the Amazon delivery drivers. And if you’re in the middle of an important call or Zoom meeting, there will invaribaly be a delivery at a critical moment.
  6. In a regular year, I spend a significant amount of time attending sporting events and concerts. I miss live sports and live music.
  7. You can spend plenty of money staying home and shopping online.
  8. Cotton masks are more breathable than the more fashionable polyester ones.
  9. Sweatpants are just as comfortable as they were in college, and yoga pants are the most versatile and comfortable things ever.
  10. I like working from home, especially with a yellow office chair. But it turns out I also take a lot of snack breaks when working from home.
  11. You can learn how to do almost anything by watching a YouTube video or using a Google search bar. For instance, I learned how to change a burned out taillight in my car, and how to build a website.
  12. Socially distanced happy hours with friends are life-giving. Even if they're hosted in a driveway or garage.
  13. I am a hug-greeter.
  14. There is no need for the weekly screen time report from an iPhone.
  15. I may never wear high heels again. And that doesn’t make me sad at all. Because sneakers!
  16. I touch my face. A. LOT.
  17. Working out at home is so good when you have a designated place and the right equipment. And the Peloton app is everything.
  18. Ted Lasso” gets better each time you watch it. No, really! There are so many one-liners and witty quips that it’s hard to pick them up if you only watch the series through once. Wait a month or so, and watch the full season again. And maybe even a third time.
  19. Doing all the things at home -- working, working out, eating every meal, watching television, playing board games, and everything else -- can be a little too much home.
  20. I'm much more introverted than I ever thought I was.

A year ago, I could've never predicted what the year had in store for us. Certainly, there have been plenty of times over the past year that I was missing out on the typical routines and events, and I was looking forward to things returning to "normal."

But honestly, this past year has also been a year of incredible growth. I've learned so much about myself and my life. Resilience, patience, nimbleness, flexibility, empathy, and so much more.

And because of those lessons, there are plenty of things that I will not be bringing with me when we get back to "normal."

While those lessons have sometimes been painful to learn, they've also been some of the most important of my life.
