Father's Day and the Last Round

The trouble is you always think you have more time.

When I lose the weight and feel comfortable walking the beach in a swimsuit, I'll book the family vacation.

When I retire, I'll learn how to fly fish and play the guitar.

When I have enough money saved up, I'll travel the world.

When the kids are out of the house, I'll remodel and buy the "good" furniture.

But time is precious. And fleeting. And someday is not a day on the calendar.

5 years ago on Father's Day, I had just returned from 3 weeks in Italy. As per usual, I called my Dad to wish him a happy day. He was working in the garage and was going to hit some golf balls at the driving range...just a typical Sunday. He was moving to Boise just weeks after that Father's Day call. We talked about how great it was going to be to spend the following Father's Day on a golf course in Boise.

Only we didn't realize then that we'd be too late. You see, my Dad died of a heart attack just 6 months after that Father's Day call.

He did move to Boise. And while we road bikes to local wineries, boated on Lucky Peak reservoir, cheered on the Boise State football team, and did lots of other things, we never played that round of Father's Day golf.

It's a good reminder to me today and every day that we don't know how much time we have left.

None of us is getting out of here alive. Take the time now to do whatever it is you want to do; whatever you need to do.

Tell people you love them.

Travel.

Learn.

Be present.

Give grace and forgiveness more easily.

Appreciate people and experiences.

Stop just talking about it. Or wishing for it. More doing and less planning.

Really live. While you're still here and able to do so.
