Heavy Heart

My heart has been heavy this week.

How’d we get to the point in this country that it’s no longer shocking to hear that we’ve set a new daily record for COVID deaths in the US?

I remember reading in March that 100,000 Americans could die of COVID without a concerted, diligent response. And I remember being stunned by that number. Because it’s 2020. And we have the benefit of modern medicine. 100,000 is A LOT of mothers and fathers and grandparents and friends. Surely, that number couldn’t be right.

Yet, here we are. COVID cases are surging across the country. We’re setting daily records for virus numbers. We’re setting daily records for COVID deaths. Over 290,000 Americans have died.

Looking back, the loss of 100,000 lives would have been a best-case scenario.

In Idaho, we're #1 in the country for positivity rate...not exactly the best list to be atop.

In Boise, mask-mandate protesters are shutting down health department meetings where important decisions are needed.

They’re showing up in front of homes of public officials, and threatening them and their families. These people are simply doing their jobs — the jobs they were elected to do. And their families? Well, they should be off-limits to the trauma and threats. They should be safe in their own home.

And in another part of our great City, swastika stickers were plastered all about the Idaho Human Rights/Anne Frank Memorial. A despicable act always, and even more so on the eve of Hanukkah.

We are better than this. We must be better than this.

This isn’t about politics or the Constitution.

This isn't about looking out for your own self and family with utter disregard for your friends and neighbors.

This is about humanity. This is about being a good person. This is about caring for others. This is about doing what’s right, even when it’s inconvenient.

My heart is heavy this week.

We must do better than this.
